We recently helped a really friendly and fun couple with a custom glass shower enclosure down in Lakeside. Below are a couple photos.

Neo-angle custom shower enclosure for a Lakeside Mt 59922 customer

This style of custom glass shower is called a neo-angle shower. The beauty of a neo-angle shower enclosure is that you can cut off a corner of the shower that might intrude into your bathroom space too much otherwise. The above custom shower enclosure would have had to be smaller due to the space limitations.

For example if your towel was close to the spot where you’d the custom shower door to be placed and the swing path of the shower door would make opening the shower awkward, you could have a neo-angle enclosure installed. You’d be able to “cut” the corner off the standard custom shower layout while maintaining as much room within the shower as possible.

Another benefit of a neo-angle shower enclosure is that you can “soften” the “hard” 90 degree corner typical in most custom shower enclosures. This softened corner area with the two 135 degree corners can match the overall design of your updated bathroom. Plus it’s more kid friendly! Imagine running into that sharp 90 degree corner and hitting your forehead, ouch!

One of the most difficult aspects of neo-angle showers is to ensure all three custom glass panels meet at the correct angle. You want the glass to be centered on the tile curb typically for aesthetics and water management purposes and if you get the angles incorrect you will quickly run into installation issues.

Some of the finer details of neo-angle installation:

  1. True 135* angles are needed with going glass to glass otherwise standard hardware options and colors may be limited. For example: if the glass to glass angle is 132 or 139*, we’d need to order a different type of hinge system. Since these aren’t as common the manufacturers don’t offer as many shower hardware finish options.
  2. You want the shower door to swing completely through the opening, especially connecting the glass to a pony wall. So build the wall “ends” to ensure the glass can connect to the wall at a 90* angle which will allow the door to swing through fully.
  3. Think through water management issues. Since neo-angle showers are smaller and the door is typically installed in the middle pane of glass, water management and leak prevention should be well thought through. We’d hate to have puddles outside of your newly installed custom shower and onto the brand new bathroom floor tile!

If you’re thinking of having a custom shower enclosure and the space is limited, neo-angle showers are a great option. Even with the design challenges that may come with neo-angle showers they help save space, update the look of a small bathroom, and can help get around other features in the bathroom.
