We’ve been having a lot of fun with this artistic mirror project up on Whitefish Mountain Resort or as many folks within the Flathead Valley know it, Big Mountain. The mirror glass really looks neat in this photo! Oh and the green tape is to hold the mitered mirror edges together.

 

The dips that you are seeing are intentionally caused during the kiln casting process. Kiln casting is a process where glass is layered on glass, put into a special type of oven, then heated to specific temperature over a specific amount of time to melt the glass together, and then cooled in a specific manner as well. It’s really quite an interesting glass process requiring lots of equipment and experience. Precision Glass partners with kiln casting experts from around the United States so that we can bring great glass finishes to the Flathead Valley!

 

But I’m getting distracted :-). After the kiln casting process, the glass mirrors above where then mirrored on the textured side so that light can travel through the dark gray glass, get distorted by the kiln texture, and then bounce back through the glass once it hits the back side mirroring. If the kiln texture was on the front side of the glass mirror it wouldn’t be as dynamic and the light would be distorted too much by the texture itself and you wouldn’t be able to tell that it’s a mirror.

 

This project has really been a joy to work on and has pushed Precision Glass into new ways of thinking and working. We plan on continuing to learn about what’s possible with glass and bring more exciting ideas to the Flathead Valley!
